Thursday, the last day of lessons and exploration, took our Croatian Language and Culture Course students to Lumbarda on Korčula island, where the trip featured a heady mix of art and wine tasting. The artist awaits us at the top of the stairs.

Wine, Study and Paintings

Our lesson began at 9.00am today and we carried on talking about all sorts of things and trying to brush up on our verb endings.  After class, three of us decided to have lunch on the riva and found a nice spot for a light meal before returning home for a much needed snooze.

At 3.45 we all set off for our final excursion of the week to Lumbarda where we were visiting the Bire winery and the artist Stipe Nobilo. After driving across Korčula we arrived at the winery and sat down to enjoy tasting four of their wines accompanied by various nibbles while one of the sons of the owners told us about how each of the different wines were produced and how their varying tastes developed. There was one sparkling Rosé plus a still Rosé white and red.

After that we moved on to visit Stipe Nobilo, an 80 year old professional artist well known throughout Croatia for painting brightly coloured pictures of nature in his own style. We were called in to see him in groups of four, with Linda and Marion with their own artistic connections and abilities being in the first group. In his studio were exhibited some of his recent paintings and some still under preparation, all of which were of islands covered in multicoloured vegetation and other stylistic aspects of nature. For some of us he even autographed copies of his current catalogue before calling up the next group of four.

After a drink in Lumbarda we set off on the forty-five minute drive home after a very interesting afternoon experiencing some more of the delights of this island. It’s hard to credit that once again the summer course has nearly come to an end and tomorrow will be our final day but this trip has been particularly interesting and full of delicious surprises.
